From Our Premium Collection — Made in Japan
Celebrate the beauty and symbolism of Kyoto’s famous Daimonji Festival with this striking Japanese Happi Coat. Set against a rich purple background reminiscent of the evening sky, the design captures the dramatic glow of the mountainside bonfires that illuminate Kyoto at the close of summer.
The centerpiece is the traditional “dai” (大) character, representing the most famous of the five giant fires that blaze across the mountains surrounding Kyoto. The combination of deep purple and fiery mountain imagery creates a dramatic, elegant pattern that beautifully reflects a centuries-old Japanese tradition.
A Happi Coat is a shorter-length version of the traditional kimono or yukata, making it an especially versatile choice for lounging, relaxing, or adding a distinctive Japanese touch to your wardrobe. This beautiful robe is crafted from 100% cotton and features two convenient pockets and a matching belt for a comfortable, adjustable fit.
The Story Behind the Design Daimonji is one of Kyoto’s most beloved summer traditions and marks the culmination of the O-Bon Festival, a time when Japanese families honor and remember their ancestors.
According to tradition, the spirits of deceased family members return to this world during O-Bon before making their journey back to the spirit world. To guide them on their return, five enormous bonfires are lit on the mountains surrounding Kyoto.
Beginning at approximately 8 PM, the fires are illuminated one by one, each forming a distinctive character or shape. The first and most famous is the “dai” (大) on Kyoto’s Daimonji-yama. Viewed from the city below, the glowing character creates a breathtaking spectacle against the night sky.
This Happi Coat captures the spirit of that unforgettable summer evening in Kyoto.
